Densho.org Multimedia

For Densho, the Japanese-American Legacy Project, Lux created a multimedia project designed to provide a new perspective on the World War II internment of Japanese Americans. The site stands alone (without a server) and runs on kiosks at the camps, which are now maintained by the National Park Service.

Lux graphic designers faced the challenge of presenting large amounts of information in a compelling and navigable manner. Lux developed a visual theme as well as an organizational metaphor.

One family’s real-life story became the focus and main story line, connecting the main elements of the incarceration camp system and providing a human face to camp life.

Careful information architectural development ensured that users could quickly access needed information. Lux used advanced XML techniques to develop a project that mimics database search functionality without actually using a database.
