Lux Helps the Future of Flight Take Wing
SEATTLE, February 21, 2007
The Lux Group, Inc., a Seattle-based content services company, announced today that it has recently launched a new interactive exhibit for Future of Flight in collaboration with content design and environments company TPN of Seattle.
Based on the vision of TPN, Lux developed a one-of-a-kind application that runs on numerous touch screen kiosks throughout the Future of Flight. Visitors design their own planes by manipulating actual design variables, such as aircraft size and wing size. Users select color and design schemes for their planes then print out the finished product in the museum gift shop as a unique souvenir of the visit. Each aircraft design is tracked by a bar code on the visitor's admission ticket, allowing users to modify their designs during their visit at the museum.
"It has been fascinating to work with TPN and the Future of Flight in creating a project in a physical space," said Jayson Jarmon, CEO of Lux. "It's great fun to watch little kids getting excited as they design their own airplanes on the touch screens, and then put the finished product on a poster or t-shirt."
The application is networked to operate simultaneously on touch screen kiosks throughout the museum, accommodating many guests. The work was created using XML and Flash, and is easily managed either remotely or on the network computer. The application is accessible to visitors of all types - young children, tall adults, individuals using wheelchairs, and non-English speaking visitors. The application has been localized for eight languages.
"Kids, young adults and even some grandparents like to push buttons and play with things, and this program teaches them about how airplanes fly and the choices airlines make in regard to distance, cargo, and passengers" said John Vadino, president of TPN, which designed the Future of Flight. He points out that having an interactive element throughout the Future of Flight brings the experience to life, and as you learn about technologies and characteristics, you can adjust your airplane design.
Lux continues to work with TPN on various projects.

The new Future of Flight Aviation Center & Boeing Tour debuted in December 2005. With developments in aviation technology coming at an ever-quickening pace, The Boeing Company, Future of Flight Foundation, Snohomish County Public Facilities District and the Snohomish County Airport (Paine Field) sought to create a unique interpretive center to help visitors look into the future of commercial aviation. By incorporating and expanding the existing Boeing Tour, the Future of Flight offers a remarkable opportunity to see both commercial jet production today and the direction aviation is headed in the future.
